Mostly for my own benefit cos I’m very tired today.
But the original idea was just to go through the shelf one-by-one, doing collections/box sets together. But 1) that’s not very interesting, 2) it means things toward the end of the alphabet won’t get done for a while, and 3) it would mean situations like doing 39 Ingmar Bergman movies in a row (from the Criterion box set) which is… a lot to take in, even for someone who enjoys his work. So, I think what I’ll do is import the list from my spreadsheet (because of course I have a spreadsheet) into a randomizer and do it that way. That way, I can also add new films I acquire in the course of the project and it’ll keep things fresh, cos even I won’t know what’s next.
I’m also going to create a page with a list of links to each individual post, so it’s easy to see what’s already been done or find a particular film.
Both of these things I can set up tonight and make any further organizational tweaks going forward.
I think I may also scan or photograph the cover image of the actual physical media and add it to the post, as well as noting the format/edition I’m watching, since I do have some director’s cuts and things like that, which can make a significant difference in some cases.
But we’ll see. in any case, I think the format—vital info, a brief summary, and 3-4 paragraphs of reflections—feels about right: enough to provide a perspective without overcommitting. And I may run into situations where I bump certain films from certain days if, for example, I don’t have 7.5 free hours to watch Sátántangó on the day it comes up.
But I do want to try and commit to doing at least one every day. Part of the point of this is to immerse myself in the art and the more I can make a habit of it, the more likely I’ll actually follow through.
So, stay tuned for whatever tonight’s movie will be. It could be… well, not anything. But almost.
